We may have even tried to justify our actions by twisting the truth or thinking that is was for the best in the end, so in a ways satisfy our guilty conscience. These often seemingly small actions do affect who we are and portray our image to those around us. As we enter the professional world there is not much tolerance for little white lies, dishonesty, or justification. Our choices will either make or break us. But, we need to explore if there are instances when it is better to withhold the truth or avoid misleading others when it seems perfectly justifiable. .The mora;l issue stands out When does the end justify the means? Is it acceptable to breach moral, ethical, or legal boundaries to achieve some perceived greater good? Is it morally wrong to sacrifice the few to benefit the many? Consider for example the situation in Iraq. The damage that bombs and bullets have inflicted — the deaths and maimings of thousands of people — is the price of “liberating” Iraq. Can anyone, claim the moral authority to kill or injure one group of people so that another group of people might have better lives?

FIELD OF POLITICS
In politics, people have generally come to believe that as long as theend confines to the law, the means are not consequential and thus canbe overlooked. Minor manipulations in the means for an end that'smorally good are excusable and make no such effect. Yet, in an attemptto achieve the betterment of the nation, the politician himselfaggravates mismanagement and corruption. Indian politics is marked by dynastic succession and lack oftransparency. Thus, it is widely understood that one cannot go farwithout adopting means that are always moral. Such means do helppeople rise without any connections and enter politics, and it is hardto find anyone who hasn't at one point of time or another. Does thatmean we acquit all these people for being dishonest and going againstthe law and remove them from their posts? Or should they be allowed tocontinue? Often, politicians indulge in defection, which means changing ofparties after they have won elections in the name of another party. This leads to instability and is deceit for voters who vote not justfor a candidate but also for a party. But it can also be because ofpositive reasons. The politician may be more recognized in his newparty and consequently produce positive results. So, does the end justify the means?
RELIGION
Most religions preach different ways to attain nirvana or god. Christianity believes in the Day of Judgment, Judaism believes in unity with the Lord through instructions in the Torah. Islam believes in attaining god. However, these means that are preached by different religions are misinterpreted by followers. Many religious groups have been targeted for using violent means to reach their goals. A few examples are : communal riots, majoritarian rule in many non- secular countries, resulting in forceful curtailment of the rights of minority religious groups.
Islam has never preached terrorism in any form however; this religion has come under the firing line for many activities that are globally condemned. Terrorists have various objectives. Some want to end US hegemony while some battle for causes like regional autonomy. Despite whatsoever their ideologies are, they employ extremely violent means and inflict terror on innocent passersby. All nations have come down hard on the various terrorist outfits and are preventing them from achieving their ends.

If one group employs extremely conflicting, selfish and violent means to achieve an end, they are bound to get caught up in the means. As examples in history show, such non- democratic means are bound to be met with opposition and eventually end in social, economic or political turmoil. Hence peaceful democratic and secular means should be adopted in order to campaign for any cause.

FIELD OF MEDICINE
Medically too, there is much debate over whether the ends justify the means. Abortion is legal for many reasons. It gives the mother a choice of whether she would be able to take care of a child, and would be able to satisfy its needs. However, abortion means taking away an unborn foetus's right to life which is morally dubious.

Another debatable topic is that of cloning. Cloning can be used to cure genetic defects, and provide treatment for various diseases and even organs for transplantation. Cloning does have its own disadvantages however. They include inbreeding, social unbalance, and also the fact that for every successful stem cell clone, there could be up to 250 failed attempts.
Chemotherapy is an example where the means do justify the ends, even though the means are very harsh. To kill cancer cells present in the human body, radiation is beamed onto the area affected by the cancer cells. This radiation not only kills the cancerous cells, but also the healthy cells present around it. This causes side effects like hair fall, nausea, loss of appetite, etc. However, with the alternative being a slow death, chemotherapy is used very often to treat cancer patients.
Animal testing is another controversial topic. It is vehemently opposed by animal rights activists, but the alternative to animal testing is either testing on humans, which could cause death or permanent damage, or releasing the medicine to the masses without testing, which is unthinkable.
Botox is used by many to enhance their looks or remove signs of ageing. The botulinum toxin is injected into muscles which paralyses them effectively removing wrinkles. Botox is also one of the most powerful naturally occurring neurotoxins in existence.

MEDIA
Media plays an important role in our lives. News reported by the media has great importance and is an integral part of modern society. Media reports about matters concerning people, governments, politicians, religions, war and terrorism. Media has also played a stellar role in exposing misuse of power and corruption in high places. Media makes people aware of every thing around them. It reports the pros ands cons of various things and thus helps educated people form their opinion. In this way media shapes constructive opinion making. But sometimes media also blows news out of proportion and oversteps its impartial face. In order to get more viewership or readership media tends to sensationalise reporting by commenting on victims’ characters, which not only destroys their reputation but also affects the image of their kith and kin.

FOR

· Inner functioning of big offices and institutions.
· Helps in curbing corruption.
· Makes people aware of their rights.
· Some times helps innocent people get out of trouble by finding loopholes in police investigation.
AGAINST

· Sensationalizing news
· Making stands without solid evidence
· Try to gather news unethically just to raise their TRP’S.
· Tendency to sway public opinion
· Highlight personal lives of people and celebrities by spying on them.

IMPORTANT TERMS TO CONSIDER
Consequentialism refers to those moral theories which hold that the consequences of a particular action form the basis for any valid moral judgment about that action. Thus, from a consequentialist standpoint, a morally right action is one that produces a good outcome, or consequence.
Deontological ethics or deontology (from Greek "obligation, duty"; and -λογία, -logia) is an approach to ethics that focuses on the rightness or wrongness of intentions or motives behind action such as respect for rights, duties, or principles, as opposed to the rightness or wrongness of the consequences of those actions.[1] Let justice be done though the heavens fall! is one of its slogans.
It is sometimes described as "duty" or "obligation" based ethics, because deontologists believe that ethical rules "bind you to your duty".[2] The term 'deontological' was first used in this way in 1930, in C. D. Broad's book, Five Types of Ethical Theory.[3]
Deontological ethics is commonly contrasted with consequentialist or teleological ethical theories, according to which the rightness of an action is determined by its consequences.[4] However, there is a difference between deontological ethics and moral absolutism.[5] Deontologists who are also moral absolutists believe that some actions are wrong no matter what consequences follow from them. Immanuel Kant, for example, famously argued that it is always wrong to lie – even if a murderer is asking for the location of a potential victim.[6] Deontologists who are not moral absolutists, also known as Couragists, such as W.D. Ross, hold that the consequences of an action such as lying may sometimes make lying the right thing to do.
<img width='1' height='1' Is your decision really yours or is it that of your parents, teachers, peer group or the society,at large ?we ponder and deliberate over this question in the coming session.the various issues to be taken u are as follows:

EDUCATION: The Path To Success.

They say that education is the most important aspect in a child’s life. Education helps one to decide on a career. A student can explore the world of knowledge and choose the vocation to choose his liking. Right?
NO! Absolutely not. In today’s world there is no such thing as freedom of choice for a teen particularly when it comes to career options. The most vehemently chosen stream is obviously Science. The most opted for careers… either Engineer or Doctor.
Why is this?
Is it because career options are unavailable in other streams i.e. Commerce and Humanities? It is definitely not so. Let us take a look at options available in these streams:
Humanities Careers
With the diversity of humanities disciplines, pinpointing a specific job path for humanities graduates can take a while. Many jobs in policy, research or marketing are good choices for a well-rounded humanities graduateHere are a few popular choices for humanities majors:
· Film and Media Studies -The study of film and the visual media helps students to think analytically and imaginatively about visual culture.
· Foreign Service- Especially if you've majored in the study of a particular culture, your ability to understand the workings of human society are invaluable when trying to work in a foreign country.
· Journalism -Many top journalists have humanities and liberal arts backgrounds instead of journalism school degrees.
· Law- Humanities majors are the most common prerequisites for law school.
· Public administration. If you've studied how societies work, you're probably qualified to help make them work.
· Human resource Management
COMMERCE CAREERS
BUSINESS Management: The global marketplace has truly arrived with business and commerce being carried out 24/7. Competition is getting tougher and fiercer.Nearly every single business sector or government department requires business managers, the main growth areas being Technology, Management Analysis, and Public Relations
· Chartered Accountancy:Chartered Accountants work in all fields of business and finance. Some are engaged in public practice work, others work in the private sector and some are employed by government bodies.
· An economist is an expert in the social science of economics. He may also study, develop, and apply theories and concepts from economics and write about economic policy. Within this field there are many sub-fields, macroeconomic analysis, microeconomic analysis or financial analysis, involving analytical methods and tools such as econometrics, statistics, economics computational models, financial economics.
Therefore, it can be safely concluded that career options are available in plenty in the Commerce and Humanities streams. Then, why is this mad rush after the Sciences? Are there factors which affect our choices except for thoughtful and rational considerations of what we are most suited to study?
Yes, Parental Pressure, Peer Pressure, Pressure form the Society and even the Media influence our choices to a great deal. But by the end of the day it is up who have to take up a career of our choice because we know what is best for us.no one is a better judge of us than us ourselves. We take up on the significance of this statement in the present times, during the session.
SOCIAL VALUES
Social norms focus on peer influences, which have a much greater impact on individual behavior than biological, personality, familial, religious, cultural and other influences. Often there are not much differences in the values of teenagers and parents across ethnic groups. We share similar terminal and instrumental values as our parents, implying that parents have a significant influence on the development of our values.
Thus parents play an important role in transmitting
good values to their children in resisting negative influences.

INFLUENCE OF PEERS
People who are of your age, like your classmates, friends, who have experiences and interests similar to yours, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act, to get you to do something, it's called peer pressure. Peers have a strong influence on the behavior of adolescents. It's natural for people to identify with and compare themselves to their peers
Parents do have an influence on who their children are friends with during adolescence. Teenagers choose their friends based on similarities, specifically shared values and attitudes . Also, parents who show higher levels of interest, understanding and helpfulness have been proven to have a greater influence .
Negative peer pressure has always been a factor in adolescence. However, the flip side is that there is also positive peer pressure. Studies of peer pressure indicate that most teenagers feel that their friends are likely to pressure them not to use drugs or not to engage in sexual activities .
There are also positive pressures to participate and excel in athletics, music, and various other types of extracurricular activities . This can be viewed as a way for adolescents to become better rounded, exploring positive domains other than academics.
Westernization
There are great values in the Western world: Freedom, democracy, equality (not always though), respect for the environment, less corruption. India must, and has already borrowed from these qualities. But since the last three years, it seems the Indian political and intellectual mind is pushing that 'we are as democratic, as liberal, as free as you are.' This process of copying the West to the point of aping it has, of course, already happened many times in the developing world. And it killed the soul of many countries, making them just another replica of the West -- with a youth that wears the latest Calvin Klein jeans, knows the No 1 bestseller on the Time list, can quote a few lines from Dante but knows nothing about pranayama, has never read a verse from Kalidasa and does not know who Sri Aurobindo is. The Westernisation of India must not be at the cost of her culture and spirituality.
One positive aspect of westernization is the coming together of the youth in matters of global and national importance. Western society recognizes more individual freedom and the ability of the individual of express herself or himself freely. India’s youth, in its attempt at aping the west, has adopted such ideologies. It might not always be for the best but it is certainly for the better. As a result of this westernization, we are becoming more and more aware about our surroundings. Be it politics or the environment, the youth is becoming more and more proactive.
Positive:
· Ability to fend for themselves(financially as well as emotionally)
· Openness towards socially sensitive issues like aids, HIV and sex.
· More awareness as far as subjects and streams are concerned.
Negative:
· VIOLENCE AMONG THE YOUTH
· Too much intolerance towards old set values and norms.
· More self-obsession
Impact of media on youth
"When youth actively take part promoting their own voices and culture through mass media then images of youth will be more honest because no one can speak or talk about youth better than themselves."
Overview
Overall, the media is a powerful, but untapped, tool for change. It has immense ability to educate a wide group of people, provide direction for both adults and young people, and incite people to be involved and active in the global community.
The media acts as a positive driving force for today’s youth:
· focus more on positive representations of individuals
· give a greater voice and a stronger role to young people in the media
· use the media as an educational tool for both youth and adults
However, the media often misuses its power. Television, newspapers and radio were all criticized for offering stereotypical and often negative representations. Participants repeatedly stipulated that the media tends to omit, or downplay roles and offer a biased view. Very often it encourages
· Poor self-esteem among youth
· Gender inequality and racism : we need to explore the effect of media on women and girls in particular. The media today focuses on the link between body image, in particular eating disorders, and the ubiquitous images of thin, blond, "perfect" girls. The media often promoted gender inequality by stereotyping women as materialistic and unintelligent and men as the stronger sex.
· incites violence
· deprives young people of peer role models to emulate.
Young people on today are calling for a greater and more substantial role in the media. The media is a powerful tool to influence behavior, the way people think and the way they perceive the world. It is time for the media, empowered by youth, to inform society's perspectives and bring people together to create a better today and tomorrow

Background Guide

DPS Youth Congress
Class 9

Topic: Changing Role of the Media

For more information, please download the Background Guide.

Date: 13th December 2007
Venue: AVH

WINNERS OF THE YC INTERSCHOOL MEET

The following are the names of the winners (group wise) for the Youth Congress Interschool meet held on Dec. 8 2007-

Group 1. type='text'>Congrats to All!

The Third session of Youth Congress...{and its first as an official club of the school} with class 11th on Euthanasia was quite a success!
The group discussions took place in various sectors, namely common man, media, parental, medical and legal with the help of the facilitators { both new as well as former members}. this was followed by an interactive play, presenting the participants a situation wherein they needed to analyze and think from the characters' points of view. it went ahead as per their decisions. it received quite rave responses...for which i'm glad.
but quite a few people need to be thanked for this...as it was team effort.
so i would like to first and foremost, thank all my co-members...shubhi, vibhav, tanvi, neetika, ronika and aditii. each and everyone of them took their responsibilities amazingly well...and performed better than i ever expected.
secondly it is the former members who have to be thanked....Hemantika, Akanksha, Aayush,Ashita and Dhruv. they all took out time to still be a part and help us out. this would not have been such a success without any of you!
A special mention to Radhika, who was the main lead in our play and without whom our play was not possible! thank you for being with us!
Indranil also deserves a vote of thanks, despite not being directly involved with the YC...he took keen interest and ran around soo much for us on the particular day! we would be at loss, had it not been him and his quick feet! thanks to you too!
Mrs. Archana Pental sacrificed 4 free periods to be with us on thursday...the day of the session, and many more, when we rushed to her for assisstance!
thank you so much ma'am! YC wouldn't be itself without you!
All in all, it was one of our best sessions so far. it has given us satisfaction of having achieved our first success and apprehension of topping it as well...in the next one, for we can only go further up from here!
Congrats To Everyone! Thank You once again and Keep it Up!!

DPS Youth Congress
The participants were shown a presentation which showed certain basic facts about the reservations issue i.e. the history of the practice in India, Mandal Commission I, Mandal Commission II etc, who the SCs, STs and OBCs are etc.

This phase was an interactive one wherein the student’s mind was provoked to think rationally about the issue and not form any biased opinion. We constantly asked them questions to test their knowledge and remove common misconceptions. A common misconception was them confusing the SCs and STs with the poor sections of society. <u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>Phase II: The participants carried out an informal discussion within their groups with of the organizers facilitating the discussion to ensure that each group has a holistic discussion on the topic and concentrates more on finding solutions (preferably at their level) to the problem at hand. <u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>Phase III: The participants were to summarize their discussion i.e. an analysis of the problem and the solutions on a piece of paper. Later they were read out on the stage so that all students could hear them out.<u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>Conclusion: Seeing young minds at work for their country was a very encouraging sign for us as we could see our dream take shape. When so many young minds work together, fruitful conclusions were ought to be drawn. <u1:p></u1:p>

We were successful in making the students realize that just cribbing about the problem would not help rather we, the youth of this nation must provoke our inner selves to take action. <u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>There were a lot of students who supported reservations till an extent, however they too strongly opposed the criteria on which this was granted as they felt it it should be merit based. <u1:p></u1:p>

A summary of the solutions suggested:<u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p><u1:p></u1:p>At the national level: <u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>Awareness campaigns should be held in the isolated areas (that would include tribal and rural both) so that the people can be made aware of their right to education. <u1:p></u1:p>

Access to primary education should be made a Fundamental Right enforceable in court.<u1:p></u1:p>

Government should strengthen the infrastructure in government schools so that people with lesser means can also have access to a good standard of education. They must also set up institutions to provide coaching to students at lower costs for various entrance exams so that they can also have a fair chance.

Reservations should be extended only to one generation of such classes and thus some sort of identity card should be issued to them which would be stamped once reservation is availed. <u1:p></u1:p>

This system of reservations would thus help in removing reservations in a phased manner and also ensure that the benefits reach the people who really require it.<u1:p></u1:p>

The private sector must recognize its moral obligation and form a system which would include setting up institutions which provide good standard of education at reasonable costs and also grant scholarships to people from these classes. <u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>At a personal level:<u1:p></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>We all must listen to the call of our conscience which itself would guide us to take the right steps.
<u1:p></u1:p>
We must recognize people from these classes which may include our domestic workers, collegues etc and show them the light that being educated brings with it. We could perhaps work on the philosophy of “each one teach one” which would make reservations unnecessary and bring about a change.
<u1:p></u1:p>
We all must raise our voice against any sort of injustice that the government is doing and become more aware citizens.
<u1:p></u1:p>
Take an active role in the working of NGOs or various literary missions that help in spreading necessary awareness among these classes.

  <u1:p></u1:p>
<u1:p></u1:p>We see a light in the citizens of tomorrow. These students showed us another dream…the dream of a country where there would be no reservations needed …where society would not be divided into so many castes and sub-castes…the dream of a truly united India. We are determined to fight for this cause and hope that through this session we aroused this dream in a lot of the participants too.
  <u1:p></u1:p><u1:p></u1:p>
